Susan R. Blodgett, age 61, of Iowa City, Iowa, passed away April 22, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Susan was born November 13, 1949, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to James D. and Charlotte L. (Durick) Ross Sr. She was a 1967 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and earned an Associate's Degree in Nursing from Iowa Western Community College. Susan worked in several nursing specialties, including critical care, geriatrics, infectious disease epidemiology, pediatrics, and women's health; she was particularly passionate about the safety and care of abused women and children. Most recently, Susan worked for the Pottawattamie county VNA as the Infection Control Coordinator before moving to Iowa City to begin studies toward her bachelor's of science and master's of science in nursing degrees, with a planned focus in nursing education.

Susan was a member of the Macedonia Assembly of God Church for many years, where she played the piano. She was also a member of the Macedonia Optimist's Club, the Iowa Nurse's Association, the American Nurse's Association, the University of Iowa Chapter of Circle K International, the American Federation for the Blind, and was the inaugural president of the Southwest Iowa chapter of the Iowa Federation for the Blind. In addition, Susan volunteered at the Phoenix House in Council Bluffs and the Ronald McDonald Houses of Iowa City and Minneapolis. Susan enjoyed cooking, traveling, gardening, listening to music, and spending time with her family.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Tommy and Jimmy Ross.

She is survived by daughter, Debbie J. Mahan and husband, Troy J., of Macedonia; son, Tim Clapper and significant other, Charlotte Brock Sondag, of Council Bluffs; daughter, Susie Blodgett, of Iowa City; son, John I. Blodgett and fiancée, Sara P. Green, of St. Paul, Minn.; son, Tom Blodgett and wife, Nikki, of Iowa City; daughter, Mindy C. Blodgett, of Iowa City; grandchildren, Moriah Elisabeth Mahan, Caleb Josiah Mahan, Alicia Gravett, Cory Clapper, and Colin Blodgett; great grandchildren, Savanna, Silvia, and Ryder; brothers, Duane Ross and wife, Jo Ann, and John Ross and wife, Peggy; and sister, Jeannine Steinspring and husband, Jim.

A Memorial visitation will be held 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. A Memorial service will be held 3 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home with Rev. Mike York officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Family will direct memorials.
