Madeleine French Sauers, 85 of Windmill Manor, Coralville, IA, died April 21, 2011.

Family Graveside Services will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City.

Madeleine was born June 3, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois, to Jerauld and Madeleine Ardisana French. She graduated from Riverside-Brookfield High School at Riverside, Illinois in 1943 and from Grinnell College in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and education.

For several years Madeleine was an elementary school teacher in Grinnell, Iowa. Following a move to Iowa City, she was employed for many years at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as a medical social worker and then as a personnel specialist in Nursing Administration. She retired in 1984. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.

Madeleine is survived by a son, Robert John (Oliver Bowman) of Charleston, South Carolina; a daughter-in-law, Mary, of North Liberty, Iowa; and a brother, James Gatherer (Rosemary), of Snellville, Georgia. There are two granddaughters, Beth Sauers (Josh Tepfer) and their daughter Olive and son Asher; and Katie Sauers (Pete Barker), all of Chicago. Her husband, Robert Charles, and a son, George William, predeceased her.

Memorials may be directed to Madeleine’s home for the past couple of years, Windmill Manor, 2332 Liberty Drive, Coralville, IA 52241-2771, or the Volunteer Program at Hospice Compassus, 610 32nd Avenue SW, Suite F, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52404.
