Harold Hull McCarty died January 4, 1987 at his home in Laguna Hills, California. Mr. McCarty was born September 10, 1901 in Hiteman, Iowa, the son of John Harvey McCarty and Maude Hull McCarty. He was educated in Fairfield, Iowa public schools and held a baccalaureate in commerce and masters and doctoral degrees in economics from the University of Iowa. He taught at the University of Iowa from 1923 until he retired in 1969. He was chairman of the Department of Geography from its inception in 1946 until 1965. He was also visiting professor at the University of California, Irvine from 1969 to 1971, and served as visiting professor at Christchurch, New Zealand in 1962. He authored several books and numerous papers in the field of geography. He married Vivian Elva McClenahan in 1924 and made his home in Iowa City, Iowa until 1970 when they moved to Laguna Hills, California.

Mr. McCarty is survived by his sister, Josephine Blome of Phoenix, Arizona; two sons, John E. McCarty of Mankato, Minnesota, and Robert W. McCarty of Montebello, California; two granddaughters, Susan Engel of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Nancy McCarty of Montebello, California; two grandsons, James McCarty of Mankato, Minnesota, and Richard McCarty of Montebello, California; and a great-granddaughter, Erica Engel of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian McCarty.
