Prit Pal Dhillon, of Iowa City, died Friday, January 21, 2011 at Windmill Manor in Coralville after an extended illness.

Services will begin Saturday at 2:00 pm at Lensing Funeral Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.

Prit was born March 15, 1930 in Punjab, India. A member of the Sikh faith. she completed her degree in general studies from Women’s DAV College in Jullundhar, India in 1950. She was one of 30 women in a law school of 500 students. She completed her law degree and went on to teach physical education at the elementary, secondary and college levels. She supervised 520 schools in the country, a position that allowed her to share her teaching philosophies.

In 1966, Prit came to the University of Iowa where she completed her masters degree in physical Education. She taught in that department and in Recreation Services. Her greatest teaching love was yoga and she also taught swimming. Prit remained physically active throughout her life. She was also employed at the University Hospitals & Clinics and owned and managed many rental properties.

She became a very proud US Citizen and an ardent Democrat. She was a gentle spirit who made many friends along her life’s path and she will be missed.

She is survived by her three nieces, Mrs. Aninder Kaur Jawanda of Atlanta, Georgia, Rupinder Sandhu of Fresno, California and Narinder Kaur Grewal of Sante Fe, New Mexico. She is also survived by her close friends, Rita Arora, Peg Burke, Gary Palmer and Rita Pitzen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Pratap Singh Dhillon, a niece and a nephew.
