John E. Keitel, 44, of 320 Summit Street, Oxford, died suddenly Wednesday evening, June 25, 2003 at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics from a heart attack.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 30, 2003 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oxford, with the Reverend Edmund Dunn, officiating. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Maquoketa, Iowa. Friends may call from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Church in Oxford, where there will be a parish vigil service at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Keitel Children’s Education Fund. John Keitel was born September 13, 1958, in DeWitt, Iowa, the son of Henry and Alice (Green) Keitel. He moved with his family at an early age to Lost Nation, where he graduated from high school in 1977; he then attended Scott Community College. John was united in marriage to Jane Mitchell on November 9, 1985, in Maquoketa, Iowa. The couple made their home in Oxford where he owned and operated Modern Day Roofing. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford, where he had served on the building and grounds committee and was a member of the Oxford Board of Adjustment.

John especially enjoyed his family, fishing with his children, was a friend to many and a great neighbor. He lived life to the fullest and enjoyed traveling and canoeing.

John is survived by his wife, Jane, three children; Emily, Brad & Chad, all of Oxford, his mother, Alice Lasack and her husband, Charles of Lost Nation, Iowa, four sisters; Mary Keitel-Wood and her husband, Ray of Omaha, Nebraska, Nancy Rutenbeck and her husband, Steve of Lost Nation, Sue Knight and her husband, Matt of Morton, Illinois, and Cathy Denard of Cedar Rapids, six brothers; Dennis Keitel and his wife, Margaret of Iowa City, Ron Keitel and his wife, Pat of Maquoketa, Paul Keitel and his wife, Terri of DeWitt, Iowa, Joe Keitel and his wife, Connie of Muscatine, Jim Keitel and his wife Katy of Lost Nation, his sister-in-law, Mary Lou Keitel of Davenport and 33 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Steve.
