Maryanne Nelson, age 72, of 1604 Prairie du Chien Road, Iowa City died Monday, June 30, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 3, 2003, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Renee Lunemann officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3pm Thursday at the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa. Visitation will be after 9 am Thursday until services at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society. Online condolences may be sent for Maryanne’s family through our website @www.gayandciha.com.

Maryanne was born January 30, 1931 in Keokuk, Iowa the daughter of Charles J. and Hilda F. (Anderson) Nelson. She graduated from Keokuk High School in 1949. She then attended and graduated in the first class of the four-year nursing degree program from the School of Nursing at the University of Iowa in 1953. She has spent nearly forty years in the nursing profession at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and at the Veterans Administration Hospital both in Iowa City. Maryanne was a true caregiver, not only to her patients at the hospitals, but also to her many family members, always caring for them before herself.

Her family includes a brother, Earl Nelson of Peoria, IL; nephew, Willard Nelson of Chicago, IL, nieces, Marsha Wabel of Gamaliel, Arkansas, Nancy Hays of Ft. Madison, Iowa and Andrea Lorton of Ft. Madison, Iowa; many great nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Richard and John Nelson; sister, Marguerite Nelson, and her devoted companion, Oscar Nelson.
