Helen E. Zeller, 84, of 701 Oaknoll Drive in Iowa City, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, in the health center at Oaknoll Retirement Residence following a lengthy illness.

Helen chose to deed her body to the University Dept. of Anatomy. There will be no visitation. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 2, 2003, at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Kenneth Kuntz officiating. A luncheon and family greeting time shall follow the Mass. Burial will be at a later date in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Church, U of I Women’s Athletics or an organization of your choice.

Helen was born November 27, 1918, in North Liberty, Iowa, the daughter of Alton & Mary (Ranshaw) Zeller. She had been a lifelong resident in the Iowa City / North Liberty area. Helen was a bookkeeper for Welt Ambrisco Insurance Company, retiring in 1983.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Beta Sigma Phi, St. Mary’s Altar & Rosary Society, The Voices of Experience, Altrussa International and was a volunteer with Mercy Hospital’s Mercy Guild. Helen was involved in many civic functions, volunteering for numerous organizations and was a well known figure at U of I athletic functions.

Helen is survived by a brother, Harold Zeller & his wife Linda of Westminster, Colorado; a sister, Marilyn Phillips & her husband Jack of Denver, Colorado; a niece, Carol Sturges & her husband John of Bountiful, Utah; nephews, Donald Zeller of Engelwood, Colorado and Jim Phillips & his wife Kim of Denver, Colorado.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, two infant brothers, Robert & Lloyd, and a long time friend and companion, Gladys Manning.
