Shirley Ann Rayner, 75, of Lone Tree, passed away on Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at her home in Lone Tree, surrounded by her family. Funeral services for Shirley will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Keith Hotz, Chris Westfall, Ross Rayner, Dirk Brinkmeyer, Chris Scott and Doug Scott. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 10, from 4:00 p.m. -- 8:00 p.m. at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice in memory of Shirley. Online condolences may be sent to the Rayner family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.
Shirley Ann Scott was born on July 11, 1935 in Iowa City, Iowa the daughter of Halvor and Mildred (Weibley) Scott. Shirley graduated from Iowa City, City High School and then attended Iowa Wesleyan College, and graduated from the University of Iowa receiving her teaching degree. Shirley was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Shirley taught at a country school on Newport Road before teaching at Grant Elementary in Muscatine, retiring in 1995. On June 21, 1959, Shirley was united in marriage to Keith Rayner in Iowa City. They lived in Iowa City for two years before moving to the family farm, where they have lived ever since. Shirley was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City. She loved to travel with Keith. They visited Europe many times. Shirley loved to shop, entertain, feed and watch the birds, walk and ride her bike. One of her favorite places was Grand Cayman.
Shirley will be deeply missed by her husband, Keith of Lone Tree, her children, Lisa Ann Ebanks of Grand Cayman and Kara Louise Schares and her husband Bill of North Liberty; one grandchild; Taura Ebanks of Grand Cayman; one brother, Dr. William Scott and his wife Winnie of Iowa City, and her sister, Susan Scott of Clinton.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents.
