Betty M. Calkins, 77, of Coralville passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City on Saturday, November 27, 2010. A Memorial Service will be held at 3pm Tuesday, November 30 at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Avenue in Iowa City, where the family will greet friends from 1pm until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Boys Town or the American Cancer Society.
Betty was born on October 6, 1933 in Kalona, IA, the daughter of Glen and Opal (Butterbaugh) Hochstetler. She lived in the Kalona/Wellman area until moving to Iowa City in 1942. On January 24, 1953, Betty was united in marriage to Donald Calkins.
Betty was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother who truly loved spending time with all of her family. In her free time, she enjoyed collecting jack-in-the-pulpits, paperweights and Betty Boop. She also enjoyed bird feeding, growing flowers, attending flea markets and tractor shows, playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and indulging in a Dairy Queen peanut butter blizzard now and again.
Survivors include her husband Donald of Coralville, four daughters: Sherri (Douglas) Stastny of Kalona, IA, Linda Longwell Calkins and her companion Scott Stutsman of Iowa City, Charlene (Ted) Everett of Geneseo, NY and Vala Ree Calkins-Kindon of Iowa City; two brothers: Donald (Carol) Hochstetler of Cedar Rapids and Sherman (Velma) Hochstetler of Conway, AR; nine grandchildren: Elysia Stastny, Carissa Engle, Tanisha Black, Dustin Longwell, Danielle Longwell, Catherine Everett, Brandon Calkins, Samantha Kindon and Dylan Kindon; eight great-grandchildren: Jade, Chloe, Jacob, Alexis, Estella, Evelyn, Nubia and Onyx; two aunts: Maxine Butterbaugh of Wellman, IA and Berniece Kinnen of Davenport; and several nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister Marjorie.
