Phil was born in Grant County, Indiana on 9/21/1928. He was the son of Dewey and Berta Jacks and grew up in Gas City, Indiana, graduating from Gas City High School in 1946. In 1951 he married Patricia Ann Presnall his wife for the ensuing 58 years. After graduating from Ball State Teachers College (now Ball State University) in 1952 Phil began a teaching and coaching career that spanned 10 years. During this time period he taught high school mathematics and coached football and track in both Indiana and Ohio. He was also the Head Football Coach for Margaretta High School in Castalia, Ohio.
Phil left teaching to work for General Tire in Marion, Indiana and eventually took a position with Sheller-Globe Corporation which brought the family to Iowa in 1965. After leaving Sheller-Globe he returned to graduate school, earning his Masters Degree in Adult Education while resuming his teaching career with Kirkwood Community College.
Phil never really retired after leaving Kirkwood Community College. During the next 25 years he was a small business owner (fuel service business), tax preparer/IT specialist for H and R Block, and a driver for Enterprise Rent-a-Car, as well as for the local airport shuttle service.
Phil was a retired Lt. Colonel with the United States Army Reserve, serving our country with pride for over 30 years. He was active in the Lion’s club and the Johnson County Republican Party, having run for the Iowa State Senate in the 1980’s.
Phil loved spending time with his family and supporting his two favorite sports teams; the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes. His special joy was watching his grandkids dance, play baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer football and Tae Kwon Do.
Phil loved to travel with Pat, taking many trips to places such as Italy, England, France, Russia, Ireland, Canada, Germany, and Alaska. He loved to read and solve crossword puzzles and was never too busy for a story, a game of Memory (which he could never win!), Bingo, or Tripoli or just making Barbie talk with his granddaughter.
Survivors include his wife Patricia “Pat” of Iowa City, a son Tom (Dale) Jacks and their children Andy and Eric, all of Hillsborough, NJ, a son Tobin Jacks of Coralville and his sons Michael and Daniel, and a daughter Cindy (Jim) Noesen of Iowa City and their children Kyle, Katie and Molly. Survivors also include a brother David (Kathy) Jacks of Marion, IN and a sister Dianna Jacks of Carmel, IN. Phillip was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Betty Reynolds and a brother Bill Jacks.
