Leland D. Cornwall, Sr., 77, of 144 Friendship Street, Iowa City, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics following a lengthy illness.

Graveside Services will be held Saturday, April 26, 2003 at 11am at Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will greet friends Friday from 5-7pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.

Leland was born February 2, 1926, in Macoun, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Arthur and Clara Poggenpohl Cornwall. He married Mary Werner November 6, 1947, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Leland retired in 1991 from the maintenance department at the University of Iowa, where he had worked for almost 15 years. retiring in 1991. Previously he had been employed at the Ford and Pontiac Garages.

Leland was a member of First United Methodist Church, AARP and the Iowa City/ Johnson County Senior Center. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, water skiing, boating and camping. Leland was an avid card player.

Leland is survived by his wife Mary; two daughters, Linda Thomae and her fiancé Gary Recker, both of Cedar Rapids, and Jan Harney and her husband Bill of Oxford, Iowa; one son, Leland Dale Cornwall Jr. of Minneapolis, one brother, Barry Cornwall and his wife Dee of Iowa City; two granddaughters, Melanie Schnetzler and Jennifer Thomae, and three great granddaughters, Ariel, Olivia and Waverly Kate; and his Siamese cat Sam.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Doris and Dorothy, and one brother, John.
