Whilmine “ Minnie” O. Worrell, 101,of Solon passed on peacefully Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the Iowa City Rehabilitation and Care Center.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am, Wednesday, August 11, 201 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon with Rev. James Vrba officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7:30pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where a rosary will be recited at 7 pm with a Vigil Service to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Church in Solon or Iowa City Hospice.
Minnie was born July 1, 1909 in rural West Branch, the daughter of August and Whilmine Christensen Petersen. She was raised in West Branch where she attended school. On April 3, 1929 Minnie married George E. Worrell in Solon. They farmed east of Solon for 35 years.
Minnie was a longtime resident of Solon and member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, the National Catholic Society of Foresters and Stinocher Post #460 American Legion Auxiliary. As a youth Minnie was proud to have ridden her horse Nick in Herbert Hoover’s presidential parade in West Branch. Most important to Minnie was her devotion to her faith, her family and her friends. She will be remembered for her baking and cooking, especially her kolaches and homemade pies. Minnie was a gifted quilter and member of many card clubs.
Minnie is survived by seven children, Ronald (Donna) Worrell, Jim (Bev) Worrell and Linda (Kevin) Manary, all of Solon, Richard (Betty) Worrell, Arlene Jennings and Darlene Griffith, all of Cedar Rapids and Rose (Terry) Michel of Oxford; 26 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmothers Johanna and Lulu, her husband in 1978, her son Gary in 2010, sons-in-law James Jennings and Thomas Griffith, brothers Victor, Oscar, Henry and Fremont, sisters Mary Wright and Martha Alexander.
