Donald McGuire Crum, 79, of Iowa City passed away on August 3, 2010 at the University of Iowa Hospital.
The son of Donald C. Crum and Hyacinth McGuire Crum, Don was born in Minneapolis and grew up in Windom, MN. After serving in the U.S. Air Force
during the Korean War, he attended Drake University receiving a degree in business management. Don then began work in retailing management in Des Moines, IA where he met and married, Dorothy A. Papich. They moved to Iowa City in 1968. Once in Iowa City, Don became an active figure in community development. This included significant work towards the renewal of downtown Iowa City. As manager of the Younkers department store, 17 years as a realtor -- most currently with Coldwell Banker Real Estate Professionals, and through participation on innumerable committees including serving on the UI chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon alumni board for more than 30 years, Don touched the lives of many throughout the community with a sincere interest in the well-being of the people around him.
Don's enduring enthusiasm for his work carried over to his leisure activities. These included piloting small planes, water skiing, scuba diving, biking -- seventeen RAGABRAI's beginning in 1975, and a wholehearted love of the Hawkeyes.
Don leaves his wife Dorothy; son, Donald Nicholas Crum; daughter, Poppy Anne Carrie Crum; grandchild, Hanna Katherine Vance-Crum; loving cousins and their families, and many dear friends.
Don was preceded in death by an infant son, Christian; sister, Patricia Ragen; and his parents.
A memorial service will be held August 14th from 2-4 pm at the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame in Iowa City. Remembrances may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
