George Haman, Jr., 86, of Oxford, died of cancer on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at Windmill Manor in Coralville.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford, with the Reverend Edmond Dunn officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Oxford. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm at St. Mary’s Church, Oxford, where a Vigil Service will be held at 6:45 pm. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford or Iowa City Hospice. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service.
George was born June 3, 1923 in rural Oxford, the son of George and Gertrude Rohret Haman. He graduated from Cosgrove High School in 1941 and married Dorothy Springmire on November 8, 1944 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. George was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Church in Oxford and worked at Nagle Lumber in Oxford and Iowa City for 42 years, retiring in 1988. He enjoyed bowling, reading, gambling in Las Vegas and local casinos and watching sports; especially the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes and spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
George was a member of the Iowa City Bowling Association Hall of Fame, Oxford Housing and Development Board, Oxford Zoning Committee, longtime Oxford Community School Board member and board member of First Trust and Savings Bank in Oxford for 42 years.
The family extends their appreciation to Iowa City Hospice for the care and support they have provided.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Dorothy; his children Ann Mara (Jim) of San Diego, California, Janet Haman of Oxford, and Thomas (Marlene) Haman of Iowa City; six grandchildren, Brian Mara, Jeny (Victor) Parra, Amy (Curtis) Helfers, Kristina (Henrik) Hansen, Melissa (Christopher) Kollasch, and Scott (Leah) Haman; thirteen great-grandchildren; his sisters Monica Krall of Solon and Alice (Robert) Walter of Cheyenne, Wyoming and sister-in-law Mary Ann (Richard) Yenter of Arizona City, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Anna Marie Miller, and infant brother Leonard and Eugene.
