Ethel Baskin Rothstein, 87, of Iowa City passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center following a short illness. Burial will be held at 11AM Monday, April, 26 at The New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon, NY. A Memorial Service for family and friends will be held at 2pm on Sunday, May 23, 2010 at Agudas Achim Congregation, 602 East Washington Street in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to either Iowa City Hospice or Agudas Achim Congregation. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
Ethel was born on January 6, 1923 in Mineola, NY, the daughter of Samuel and Rose Marion (Sokolowsky) Baskin. She was raised in Westbury, NY and lived in Suffolk County for many years. Ethel graduated from Westbury High School in 1940 and later attended Brooklyn College. For several years, she worked as a bookkeeper for the federal government and the Nassau County Treasurer. On January 18, 1948 Ethel married Mark Rothstein and they lived in Bay Shore, N.Y. He later passed away in 1974. In 1981, Ethel moved to Oklahoma City for 13 years and then to Fairfield, IA where she resided until moving to Iowa City in 1998.
Ethel was a member of Agudas Achim Congregation in Iowa City. She was also a past Girl Scouts den mother and a volunteer in the Bay Shore and Oklahoma City Hospital gift shop. She had a wonderful sense of humor, even until the end and was loved by all her knew her.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law Sue and Ken Blackwell of Iowa City, a son Jack Rothstein of Tulsa, OK; three grandchildren, Mark Rothstein and Winston Rothstein both of Tulsa, OK and Justin and his wife, Alicia Deman of Iowa City; nieces Karen (Woody) Levinson and Robin (Asher) Ladner all of Dallas, TX and a nephew Steven (Carol) Baskin of San Antonio, TX. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother Jerry Baskin and a sister-in-law Beryl Baskin.
