Dorothy “Dot” Montgomery, 77, of 2315 Rochester Avenue in Iowa City, died unexpectedly Friday, February 26, 2010 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics after a short illness.

Dorothy was born August 16, 1932 in Tiffin, Iowa, the daughter of Jasper and Ruth (Chapman) Spivey. Graduating from Tiffin High School, Dorothy played basketball for the Tiffin Yellow Jackets – “yeah team!”. She worked for many years at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. Dorothy married James “Mike” Montgomery May 3, 1950 in Iowa City. Mike died in 1986. She later was married to Paul Miller for 11 years.

Dorothy loved life. She often was the life of the party and was the center of the family. She especially loved being a grandma. Dorothy also enjoyed camping, fishing (with the exception of baiting the hook), visiting the casinos and had a lifetime love of cooking. She was also a member of the Morse Community Club.

Survivors include her children, Mike “Buddah” (Beth) Montgomery of Iowa City, Peggy (Ron) Macal of Marion, Iowa, John Montgomery of Houston, Texas, Kate (Marvin) Neuzil of Iowa City, Patti (Ken) Mullnix of Williamsburg, Iowa, Mary (Mike) Young of Iowa City and Stacy (Bill) Scesney of Fishkill, New York;
18 grandchildren;
15 great grandchildren;
brother, Ted Spivey of Tiffin;
sisters, Helen Pierce of Iowa City, Evelyn Price of Iowa City and Lola Reynolds of California and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Mike, a son Dan Montgomery, brother, Ken Spivey and sisters, Lena Krueger, Margaret Keil, Mearl Douglas, Lucille Eisentrigger and sisters in law, Mary Ann Herdliska and Marie “Cork” Moore.

The family wishes to thank the staff at U of I Hospitals & Clinics for the care given to Dorothy.
