John W. Maier, 76, of 4303 Maier Avenue, Iowa City, died Saturday, January 16, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 300012th Avenue in Coralville. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m., at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. A memorial fund has been established in John's memory. John William Maier was born June 2, 1933, in Iowa City to William and Agnes (Kasper) Maier. He attended Union Township School, and later University High School, graduating in 1952. After high school he was drafted to the United States Army being stationed in Japan for two years. While on leave from service, he married Janice Morford at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City, on December 28, 1953. John was a third generation farmer, with his son, Bill following in his footsteps. John spent his entire life on the farm, his family and farming were the true loves of his life. His daily routine included driving around in his pickup, and checking the DTM machine for the weather and crop prices. John and Janice have seen many dance floors in eastern Iowa and he loved a good card game with his buddies at the Eagles. A proud moment for John was to be able to attend his granddaughter's wedding in Colorado last May.

He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Eagles 695, the Cattleman's Association, Iowa Pork Producers, a 4th degree Knight of Columbus, and a former member of the Moose.

His family includes his wife, Janice; children, Linda Maier of West Des Moines; Judy (Steve) Stimmel of Iowa City; and Bill (Denise) Maier of Iowa City; and grandchildren, Ellen (Travis) Robinson, Scott Stimmel, and Tom Maier.

John was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Austin Maier; and a sister, Anna Kral.
