Gertrude Owen, 96, of Iowa City died Monday, December 28, 2009 at Mercy Hospital following a brief illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 pm, Wednesday, December 30,2009 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, with burial to follow at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Gertrude was born August 30, 1913 in Iowa City, the daughter of John and Theresa Bream Miller. She was a graduate of City High School and Irish Business College. On July 5, 1947 Gertrude married Franklin Owen.
Gertrude was employed for over 44 years with Northwestern Bell, retiring in 1977. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Survivors include her step-son, Frank “Skip” (Vicki) Owen of San Diego, CA; her nieces Loretta Patterson and Lorna Negus, both of Iowa City and her nephew John Anderson of Richardson, TX and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband in 1971 and her siblings, Dorothy Dreyer, Marguerite Anderson, Loretta Hurlbut and Theodore Miller.
