Milo L. Dlouhy, 83, of Hills died Saturday, November 14, 2009 at his home following a long illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10am Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4-7pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Milo Dlouhy Memorial Fund in care of Hills Bank, 131 Main Street, Hills, IA 52235.
Milo was born on September 27, 1926 in rural Johnson County, IA, the son of Benjamin and Pauline Vecerka Dlouhy. He attended the Stone Academy in Solon and later attended Morse grade school. On December 27, 1949, Milo married Mary Ellen Harney at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. From 1957-1972, Milo owned and operated Milo’s Conoco on the corner of Burlington and Clinton Streets in Iowa City. In 1972, Milo decided to sell the gas station and a short time later went to work for the City of Coralville Streets Department where he continued to work until his retirement in 1987.
Milo was a man of many interests, some of which included hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, bowling, gardening and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees and watching Nascar races. Milo was a wonderful man who cared deeply about his family and cherished the time he spent with them.
Survivors include his wife Mary Ellen of Hills, son Milo “Butch” of Iowa City, his grandchildren: Milo Dlouhy II of Iowa City, Brandi Dlouhy of Cedar Rapids, Dale Dlouhy of Iowa City, Nathen Dlouhy of Iowa City, Stephanie Dlouhy of Tiffin, Justin Dlouhy-Temeyer of Oasis, IA and Eric Dlouhy-Temeyer of Cedar Rapids; his two sister-in-laws Dorothy Dlouhy of Iowa City and Bertie Davidson of Fairfield, and several nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.
Milo was preceded in death by his parents, his four brothers; Ben, Ed, Robert and Charles and his two his sisters; Eleanor Cotter and Blanche Raim.
