Ruth Jeanette Ferrel, 82, of Iowa City, died October 12, 2009, at home after a sudden illness. Per Ruth’s wishes, her body was cremated.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, October 15th, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave. Memorial Services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 16th at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City.

Ruth married Elmer Ferrel on July 4, 1943 and they were blessed with 5 children: Twila (Tom) Meder, Michael (Phyllis) Ferrel, Sharon (Paul) Quick, Patrick (Gina) Ferrel, and Cynthia (Don) Hovet, 10 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.

Ruth and Elmer settled in Iowa City in 1947. Ruth was a stay-at-home mom for many years and then worked for the Iowa City Community School District for 17 years as a food service worker and kitchen manager before retiring in 1989.

Ruth had many interests but her passion was embroidery, especially Brazilian embroidery. Over the years she completed more than 75 exquisite pieces.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Iowa City or Iowa City Hospice.
