Donald L. Engquist, 86, of Iowa City, died Thursday, July 2, 2009 at his home.

Don was born on February 24, 1923 in Harcourt, IA to Lawrence and Signa (Quist) Engquist. He attended Iowa State University for 2 years before enlisting in the Navy in 1942. He served until 1946, at which time he returned to Iowa and graduated from The University of Iowa. Don married Frances Elsberry on October, 19, 1952 in Pilot Mound, IA. He was a longtime employee of Preferred Risk Insurance Company in Des Moines and an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines. Don was a lifelong Hawkeye fan, a die-hard Cubbie, and enjoyed his garden and golfing.

Don is survived by his wife Frances, a daughter Mary Maxwell (Greg) all of Iowa City, a son James Engquist (Carolyn) of Colorado Springs, CO, five grandchildren: Amber Vigil (Javier), Matthew Maxwell (Jess), Christopher Maxwell, Katie Engquist, and Tim Engquist.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Robert Engquist.
