Gary R. Chapman, 65, of 2259 East Grant View Dr. in Coralville, died unexpectedly of a heart attack Tuesday, January 13, 2004 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after many years of living with heart disease.

Gary was born June 4, 1938 in Beetown, Wisconsin, the son of Lester & Ramona (Mink) Chapman. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1956. Gary married Ruth Darlene Jentz on October 12, 1957 in Dubuque, Iowa. After graduating from high school, he worked for National Food Stores in Dubuque until 1963. Gary & Darlene moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1963 when Gary took a position with the Johnson Avenue Hy-Vee Food Store. Gary continued at the Johnson Avenue store until 1973 when he then transferred to the Coralville, Iowa Hy-Vee Food Store as store manager. He retired in 1991.

Gary was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City and served in the United States Navy from 1956 – 1958. He enjoyed golfing and being an Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Gary is survived by his wife Darlene of Coralville; a son Greg Chapman, his wife Cindy and their children Cristy, John & Carrie of Maryville, Missouri; a daughter Linda Chapman and her children Kara & Keith; his mother Ramona A. Chapman of Ft. Myers, Florida; two brothers, James Chapman & his wife Shirley of Dubuque and Jeff Chapman of Little Rock, Arkansas; one sister Bonnie Chant of Blairsville, Georgia; brothers in law, Roger Jentz & his wife Judy of Potosi, Wisconsin and Kenneth Jentz & his wife Pat of Cuba City, Wisconsin; sisters in law, Helene Bennett & her husband Jack of Surprise, Arizona and Donna Weires & her husband Sonny of Dubuque, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his father and two brothers in law, Clarence & Ronald Jentz.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be directed to The American Heart Association or Zion Lutheran Church.
