Walter Thomas Atcherson, known as Tom to all of his friends, died on August 25, 2006, after a battle with cancer. His beloved wife, Olivia, was by his side and he was surrounded by family.
Tom was born on April 22, 1931, in Granite Falls, Minnesota to Ruth G. and Walter R. Atcherson. He received his BA from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. He later began his teaching career there. He received his PhD. from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.
Tom was a professor of music theory at the University of Iowa from 1964 to 1995. He was an inspiration to all of the students he taught during his 31 year tenure.
He was known for his deep love of good music, good food, and good company. He was a world traveler, fluent in German and adept in several other languages as well.
Tom is survived by his wife, Olivia, his three daughters; Ruth Maura, Clarisse, and Sophia, his three sons; George, Gordon, and Geoffrey, as well as their mother, Esther Atcherson. In addition he has two granddaughters and two grandsons.
The family respectfully requests that donations be made to Iowa City Hospice in lieu of flowers and gifts. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
