Gene M. Asprey, age 83, of Juno Beach, FL, passed away Saturday, September 30, 2006 at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center.
Born in Holstein, IA, Gene graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City, IA and later coached football there. He served as a Lieutenant in the Marine Corp in World War II. He also served in the Korean War after marrying Naomi J. Orr and having two children, Bill and Jill. Soon after, Gene came to Iowa City and got his PhD at the University of Iowa in Physical Education. He was Chairman of the Graduate Program in the Department of Exercise Science and Physical Education at the University of Iowa from 1978 to 1984. During his tenure at Iowa, he held many offices and chaired a number of important committees in several of the professional organizations in which he held a membership.
Dr. Asprey was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church and was also a devoted member of the Iowa City Noon Optimist Club sine 1960. After Gene retired in 1991, he and Naomi moved to Juno Beach, FL, where he was a resident for eight years.
Dr. Asprey will be truly missed by his loving wife, Naomi J. Asprey of Juno Beach; oldest son, G. William Asprey of Sunset Beach, CA and younger son, David R. Asprey and wife, Laurel A. Asprey of West Palm Beach, FL; one daughter, Jill N. Levin of Iowa City, IA; and three grandchildren, William R. Asprey, Sarah E. Levin and Mariah K. Levin; and two great grandchildren, Zoe A. Levin and Sandro I Levin. Contributions may be left at the church.
