Eugene “Gene” O. Sorge, 70, of 1512 Brookwood Dr. died peacefully Monday, March 12, 2007 at home surrounded by his family.

Gene was born November 22, 1936 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son Wesley and Elsie Oelwein Sorge. He was a graduate of Sumner High School and
had attended the University of Iowa. Gene served in the US Army from 1954-62 where he completed a tour of duty in Korea.. On May 9, 1987 he was united in marriage to Sherilyn Russell at the First Assembly of God Church in Iowa City.

Gene was employed by the US Postal Service for thirty two years, and later as a distribution clerk with ACT. Gene was a member of First Assembly of God Church, the American Postal Workers Union, AARP and NRAFE.

Gene was a loyal supporter of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. He was an avid fisherman and bowler who enjoyed playing cards with friends and trying his luck with the lotto. Gene cherished the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Gene is survived by his wife, Sherilyn; and their children, Angelia (John) Hird and their children Billy and Bethany; Cynthia (Joel) Djengue of Denver, CO.; Eric (Christina) Sorge of North Liberty and their children McKenna, Mitchell, Mason and Myles; Fred Sorge of Louisville, KY. and his children Sage and Aidan; two stepsons, James (Kimberly) Russell of Lone Tree and their children Nicole, Kendra, Britney and Zach; Gordon J. Russell III and his fiancé, Sara Griffin of Tiffin; his sister, Luella Eckenrod of Sumner; his former spouse, Judy White of Mitchellville.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers-in-law, Bill Eckenrod and Bob Weltner, and his nephew, Marvin Eckenrod.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
