Charles “Charlie” Foster died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, March 31, 2007 in Iowa City, Iowa. He was born April 17, 1921 in Fremont, Ohio. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps in 1942, serving in England during WW2, Korea in the early 1950s and several SAC bases in the United States during the late 1950s and 60s, achieving the rank of Lt. Col. He retired from the USAF in 1967 after his final assignment at Vandenberg AFB, California. Following his military career, he received his Master’s in Education in 1968 from Chapman University and taught at Los Padres Elementary School in the Lompoc School District for 17 years. From 1968 to 2001 he resided in Santa Maria, California with his beloved wife Evie, to whom he was married for 59 years. Charlie enjoyed golfing, antiquing and was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church, the Elks, and the Retired Officers’ Association. After Evie’s death, Charlie relocated to Iowa City, Iowa in 2002, residing at Walden Place. During the last three months of his life, Charlie received wonderful care from the staffs at Crestview Nursing Home and Mercy Hospital.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lucy Foster of Fremont, Ohio and his wife Evie of Santa Maria, California. He is survived by his two children, Stephanie Holder of Yorktown, VA and Tom Foster of Iowa City, Iowa and four grandchildren. Interment will take place with an Air Force honor guard at Oakland Cemetery at 10 AM on Saturday, April 21, 2007 followed by a celebration of life service and reception at Zion Lutheran Church at 11 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Crestview Nursing Home (West Branch, IA), or Mercy Hospital (Iowa City, IA).
