Muriel H. Watson, 107, formerly of Chariton, died peacefully Monday, May 7, 2007 at
Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.

Muriel was born March 4, 1900 in Murray, Iowa, the daughter of John and Alpharetta
(Olmstead) Johnson. Muriel was one of twelve children. She graduated from Murray High School in 1917 and attended Capitol City Commercial College in Des Moines. In 1931 she married John R. Watson in Chariton.

John and Muriel operated the Charitone Café for twelve years, which was located in the hotel in Chariton. They then moved to Chicago where Muriel was employed with the Chicago Post Office. In 1962, following retirement, John and she
returned to Des Moines to reside with Muriel’s sisters, Grace Donner and Rose Dryer.
John died in 1982. In 1991, Muriel moved to Iowa City to be closer to her niece, Lucille B. Kinnamon, and her family. Muriel cherished the time spent with her family.

Muriel’s family wishes to express their appreciation to the private caretakers who cared for Muriel in her home, the residents and staff at Oaknoll Retirement Residence, the staff and volunteers with Iowa City Hospice, and the medical and nursing staff at Mercy Hospital for the compassionate care they provided in her final years. Special thanks to the Watson family for their love and support of Muriel.

Muriel is survived by the following relatives: JoAnn Garrett, and her husband, Jim, of Chariton, Iowa; Linda White, and her husband, Marlin, of Chariton, Iowa; Tom Pratt, and his wife, Marilynn, of Oak Park, Illinois; Sue Upchurch of Seattle, Washington; Don Watson and his wife, Donna; Jerald W. Kinnamon and his life partner, Sondra B. Kaska, Jon M. Kinnamon, and Judith A. Kinnamon, all of Iowa City, Iowa; Nick Baxter and his wife, Dee, of Coralville, Iowa; and Iona Baxter of Bella Vista, Arizona.

Muriel was preceded in death by her husband and siblings, Charles, Frank, Ruby, Carl,
Rose, Grace, Earl, Bernice, Florence, Kenneth and Floyd.

In lieu of flowers,memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or the Mercy Hospital Foundation.
