Dr. Donald J. “Pinky’ Conlon, 74, of Iowa City died peacefully Monday, April 21, 2008
at home surrounded by his family.

Pinky was born June 19, 1933, in Armstrong, Iowa, the son of Donald and Delores Conlon. He was raised in Spencer, Iowa where he graduated from high school. Pinky came to the University of Iowa where he received his bachelor’s degree and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He received his DDS degree from the UI College of Dentistry. On June 22, 1957, Pinky married Patricia Christie at St. Mary’s Church in Storm Lake. Pinky was later deployed by the US Army and served as a dental officer in Berlin, Germany. Upon his discharge he was accepted for advanced training with the Pediatric Dental department. In 1961, he opened his pediatric dental practice in Iowa City.

Pinky was honored to have served president of the Johnson County Dental Society, the University District Dental Society and was twice chosen as president of the Iowa Pediatric Dental Society. He had served as adjunct professor of UI College of Dentistry, a fellow member of the American College of Dentists and Delta Theta Society, National Academy of Pediatric Dentists, UI Dental Alumni Board of Directors, Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society and was a longtime Mercy Hospital staff member.

Pinky was a member and past president of Iowa City Noon Rotary. He established
the Rotary Wheel Club, which raised funds to assist City, West and Regina high schools students in need of financial aid for the foreign language trips offered each spring. Pinky was a member of the Newman Catholic Student Center, The University of Iowa President’s Club.

He loved to sail, golf and be involved in many community service organizations including the athletic booster clubs, Iowa City Tennis Association, I-Club, barbershop group, youth baseball, Elks Club, University Athletic Club. Pinky’s wonderful sense of humor will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Pinky is survived by his wife, Pat and their three children, Michael Conlon of Iowa City,
Michele Conlon of Ames and Patrick “P.J.” and his wife, Shelly of Iowa City and their children, Mackenzie, Michael and Claire; one sister, Marjorie Schott of Council Bluffs.

Pinky was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Kathleen, and his father and mother-in-law, Duke and Catherine Christie.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Noon Rotary for the Rotary Wheel Club, the University of Iowa Foundation
for Dr. Buatti’s Research Project at UIHC or the Newman Catholic Student Center.
