Andrew J. Kraus, 92, of Iowa City, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Mercy Hospital.

Andrew J. Kraus, 92, was born in Akron, Ohio on February 7, 1917 to the late Mary Staub Kraus and Andrew Kraus Sr. who both emigrated from Magocs, Hungary. He resided for most of his life in North Chicago and Zion (Beach Park), Illinois, moving to Atrium Village in Hills, Iowa in 2006.
Andrew worked his entire career in the sheet metal trade as a member of Sheet Metal Workers’ Local 73. He was a master craftsman who fashioned custom-designed sheet metal installations for many North Chicago and Waukegan area factories. Andrew served his country in the Pacific Theater of World War II, and often recounted stories of his army service.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anne, a resident of Windmill Manor in Coralville, Iowa, and two daughters, Anne Marie Kraus of Iowa City, Iowa, and Susan (Peter) Bins of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He also leaves five grandchildren: Michael (Jessica) Kelzenberg of Pasadena, California, Jennifer Kelzenberg of Iowa City, Iowa, Sarah Bins of Madison, Wisconsin, and Ellen and Andrew Bins of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He is further survived by a niece, Mary Beth (John) Pederson of Waukegan, Illinois, and a nephew, Ronald (Merle) Heninger of Eugene, Oregon, and their families. He was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Fenton Heninger.
Andrew will be remembered for his kindness, his gentle nature, his wit, and his respect for all creatures.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Atrium Village in Hills, Iowa would be appreciated.
