Paul Dent Bordwell, 86, of 2601 North Nelson Drive, Flagstaff, AZ, died peacefully at home after a short illness Sunday morning, August 3, 2008. He was preceded by his wife, Charlotte Joyce Pluckhahn Bordwell, and is survived by his three children, Theodore Allen Bordwell, Stephen Percy Bordwell, and Alice Caroline Bordwell Fulton Haugen, his seven grandchildren, and a great-grandson.

Paul was born in Iowa City August 28th, 1921, the son of Walter Percy Bordwell and Alice Yates Bordwell. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1942, with a Bachelor of Arts in English with honors and election to Phi Beta Kappa. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a code clerk. After the war he joined Irving Trust and began a career as a security analyst. He later worked on Wall Street with Francis I. DuPont and Argus Research Corporation until he retired in 1986.

He was a passionate chess player with the Irving Trust chess club, an adept and compassionate bridge partner and for a number of years sang baritone with the Piermont Choristers. He served as the chairman of the Piermont Republican Party and in that capacity appointed the first African-American postmaster in New York State. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

Memorial contributions may be made to the University of Iowa Flood Relief Fund, www.uifoundation.org/btn-flood . Lensing Funeral Home is handling the interment arrangements. A reception will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church after the interment.
