Charles E. Klein, 91, died peacefully on Friday, August 08, 2008 at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center in Coralville following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at Lensing’s Oak Hill in Coralville. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be on Monday from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Charles Klein Memorial Fund.

Charles was born on August 12, 1916 in rural Iowa County, the son of Charles R. and Elizabeth Margaret (Klever) Klein. He attended country schools in Marengo, IA and completed 10th grade. On June 13, 1936 Charles married Lorene Rotter in Rock Island, IL. From 1945 – 1946, Charles served in the Engineering Unit #965 in Japan during WWII. Prior to serving in the Army, Charles worked at Pioneer Seed Company in Marengo and later went on to become the Plant Superintendant until his retirement in 1978. Following his retirement, Charles and Lorene moved from Marengo to Coralville to be near their grandchildren.

Charles was a 56 year member of American Legion Post #76 in Marengo, IA. He also loved to garden, as he “liked to watch things grow”.

Charles is survived by his two daughters: Betty (Paul) Gardner of Coralville and their children Sheri (Keith) McDonald of Spring, TX and Lori (Dan) McMahon of Coralville, and Dorothy (Charles ) Miller of Marion, IA and their children Barbara Miller of Keokuk, IA and David Miller of Manassus, VA. Charles is also survived by his 3 great-grandchildren: Ashley and Emma McMahon of Coralville and Dylan McDonald of Spring, TX.

Charles was preceded in death by his loving wife, his parents, five brothers and five sisters.
