Gerhardt Christian Becker, 91, of Coralville, father of Catherine (Jim) Lane of Iowa City, died Saturday, August 23, 2008 at Mercy Hospital.

Gerhardt Becker was born May 16, 1917 in Matteson, IL, the son of Christopher and Elizabeth Bergen Becker. He married Margaret Weber on November 23, 1945 in Racine, WI.

He received his BS degree from Concordia University and his Masters of Music from Northwestern University.

Mr. Becker was a commissioned minister of religion and director of music for over sixty years. He served congregations in the Bronx, NY, Chicago and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Forest Park. In 2002 he and his wife moved to Iowa City where they were members of Zion Lutheran Church.

Gerhardt is survived by his five children and their spouses: Beth (Roy) Lowe, Catherine (Jim) Lane of Iowa City, Chris (Linda) Becker, Rick (Sana) Becker and Carolyn (Loren) Otte; twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his wife, one grandchild and twelve siblings.
