John D. Dougherty, 80, died peacefully at Mercy Hospital on Saturday, October 4, 2008 following a lengthy illness. Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to The American Heart Association or The Arthritis Foundation. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.

John was born on December 3, 1927 in New Market, IA, the son of Robert and Delphine (Ludwig) Dougherty. In 1950, John married Mary Margaret in Chicago, IL. John graduated from New Market High School and later went on to receive his B.A. and M.S. degrees from The University of Iowa. John was a research chemist for the University (State) Hygienic Laboratory.

John enjoyed playing the violin, trumpet and piano. He also enjoyed solving The New York Times crossword puzzles. He was very passionate about his carpentry work and remodeling projects. He was a great father who believed in giving his children the proper advice on how to “fix” things themselves. He will be dearly missed.

John is survived by his wife Mary, three daughters; Kathy Geranen of Tulsa, OK, Diane (Brian) Demers of San Diego, CA and Debra (Don) Engler of Burlington, IA, one brother Frank (June) Dougherty of Ogden, UT, a step-sister Bonnie (Wayne) Holiday of Lake Port, CA, seven grandchildren; Eric, Jason and Brandon Geranen, Laura and Valerie Engler and Christina and Kimberly Bremmer, and seven great-granchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter Sandra Engler.
