Fred J. Miller was born on January 27, 1920,in Lovington, IL, the son of Jacob and Anna (Miller) Miller. He grew up in the community.
He followed the 'wheat harvest' during his young days with his future brother-in-law, Harold Schenk.He later enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he served from 1942 until 1945. He worked with the ground crews on planes.
After his service time he and Gladys Schenk were united in marriage in the South Sharon (Grout) Church on April 24, 1946.
The couple farmed near Lone Tree and later near Riverside. They retired to Kalona in 1991.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Lone Tree American Legion and the JW's Coffee Club.
Fred was interested in many activities that included; farming (raising White face hereford and angus cross cattle), reading to his grandchildren fishing, playing bid euchre, traveling, his potato patch, cracking and picking out nuts. He loved to read, which kept him abreast of events and happenings.
Fred is survived by his wife, Gladys of Pleasantview Home, Kalona, three children and spouses: Marsha and Dene Rath of Riverside, Marlene and Gary Grout of Iowa City and Marolo and Cindy Miller of Riverside. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, who will serve as casket bearers; Gena Gesing, Aaron Rath, Leah Garris, Sara Grout, Kyle Grout, Ryan Miller, Ben Miller, Jenna Miller, and one great grandson, Andrew Rath. His sister Edna Miller of Arthur, IL, also survives.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, six siblings, Elizabeth Otto, John Miller, Sovilla Schrock, William Miller,Ervin Miller and Esther Schrock.
Fred's family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the expression of love and sympathy and the prayers offered during this time of their loss. You will be remembered always.
