Diane Sandberg, 59

Diane died peacefully on April 5th, 2009 at her beloved St. Paul, MN home with her husband by her side. Diane fought a heroic 20 month battle with cancer. The disease may have taken her life, but she never surrendered her sense of humor or her dignity. Diane was born in Cullman, AL on July 13th, 1949 to John and Vernie Bell (Carnes) Williams. For reasons that remain unknown, she was orphaned in Buffalo, NY at an early age. She was raised in foster homes in Erie Co., NY and The Protestant Home for Children in Buffalo. Growing up, everyone knew her as "Diane". On her 18th birthday, however, the State of New York presented her with a copy of her birth certificate which revealed that her first name was actually, Marie. Since she had always been "Diane" she decided to keep that name. She married Lee Sandberg in Buffalo, NY on December 2nd, 1969. Diane and Lee lived and worked in Iowa City from 1978 until 1987. In July of that year they moved to St. Paul, MN where in 1992 they purchased their home. Diane loved to garden and travel. By car, train, ship, plane and motorcycle she visited most of the 50 States, several Canadian provinces and Europe 5 times. She was preceded in death by her beloved father-in-law, Lynn Sandberg who was the only father she had ever known. Diane will be deeply missed and warmly remembered by her loving husband, mother-in-law, Della Sandberg, brother and sister-in-law, L. Bogue and Ann Sandberg, niece, Ingrid Sandberg, all of whom live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, nephew, Gus Sandberg of St. Paul, MN and her friends and neighbors.
