Uarda Fleckenstein, 89

Born: January 5, 1920 Died: April 27, 2009. Uarda "Sally" Fleckenstein died peacefully at the age of 89 on April 27, 2009 at Oaknoll Health Center, surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be 11 am Monday, May 4th at Sunset Memorial Chapel in Eureka, CA. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 9th from 10:30 to 11:30 am, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence, 1 Oaknoll Ct, Iowa City.

Sally was born on January 5, 1920 on a ranch in Fortuna, CA, the daughter of Hans Aner Erickson and Rowena "Pearl" Steinfott. Her father, Hans, worked as a farmer, and a gold miner. During the depression, Pearl worked as a cook in a redwood logging camp. Sally was raised in Fortuna and attended Fortuna High School. She met Ernest W. Fleckenstein at a dance and they were later married on January 22, 1939 in Fortuna. Sally was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She worked as a clerk in the local post office and at Macy's Department Store. Sally and Ernest divorced in 1964. She moved to Medford, Oregon in the 1970's and later to Lake Oswego, Oregon, where she traveled and was active in the Lake Oswego Senior Center. She moved to Oaknoll in May of 1993.

Sally was a social and resourceful woman. She loved photography and playing cards, especially bridge. She was active in social activities at the Lake Oswego and Iowa City Senior Centers. She was an adventurer and traveled the world, visiting Hawaii, Canada, Europe, New Zealand and Asia. While traveling, she took particular pleasure in photography and enjoying the local cuisine. Her favorite times were playing cards with family. Sally is survived by her two sons Bill and Larry Fleckenstein. Bill and daughter-law Fran of Terry, Montana, three grandchildren: grandson Allon Fleckenstein and wife Trica of Grass Valley, CA, Kevin Fleckenstein of Manteca, CA and Kenneth Fleckenstein of Billings, Montana and great-grandchildren: Mike, Tiara, Tara, Zachary, and Kylee. Larry Fleckenstein and his wife Barbara of Iowa City, and two grandchildren, Eva and husband Bret Ulery of Nevada, IA and Mark Fleckenstein of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Other family she leaves behind include: nephews Paul and David Erickson of Redding, CA and nieces Carol Frey of Novato, CA, Bonnie Erickson of Sausalito, CA, Jocyln Erickson of Trinidad, CA and cousin Maxine Hill and her husband Jesse of West End, CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Stillman and Edgar Erickson and sister-in-laws Betty and Dorothy Erickson.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Oaknoll Foundation, 1 Oaknoll Ct., Iowa City where she received loving care during the final years of her life. The family wishes to acknowledge the many compassionate people who cared for Sally over the years at Oaknoll Retirement Residence.
