Jean Cmiel, 83

Jean Cmiel, 83, formerly of 105 Cayman Street in Iowa City, died peacefully on April 10, 2009 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. Memorial services will be held Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 2:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Memorials may be directed to the Jean G. Cmiel Memorial Fund.

Jean Cmiel was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She moved to Iowa City to be near her son Ken Cmiel, a history professor at the University of Iowa who passed away in 2006. Born Genevieve Gasiorek, Jean was a devoted mother and grandmother, world traveler and avid bridge player. All who knew her will remember her wit, courage and feistiness.

Jean is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Peggy Cmiel of San Francisco, California, her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Ed Butler of Riverside, Iowa, her daughter-in-law, Anne Duggan and her grandchildren, Colin, Willa, Cordy, Matthew and Noah Cmiel. She will be fondly remembered by her many nephews and nieces in the Gibbons, Gasior and Cmiel families.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and her husband Henry.
