Services:Celebration of Life: Saturday, December 13 at 2:00 pm at the Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service at Kirkwood Avenue in Iowa City by Elder Betsy Momany and Chris Carter. A Rosary will be said prior to the service at 1:30 pm.

Dr. Jane Margaret Chalmers passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at her home in Iowa City following a long illness.

Loving wife of Knute Carter, and devoted mother of Wade and Ryan. Beloved daughter of Maree Chalmers and Alan Chalmers. Beloved sister, sister-in-law, and aunt, to Andrew, Katrina, William, Molly and Tom. Beloved niece and cousin to: Michael, Rosemary and Sarah; Kevin, Teresa, Anna and Alessia; Jennifer and Geoff. Beloved daughter-in-law, sister-in-law and aunt to: Heather; Phyl; Chris and Bev; Heath, Kylie, Devin and Regan.

Born February 25, 1965 in Sydney, Australia, she married Knute Carter on December 28, 1996. She received her Bachelor of Dental Science from the University of Melbourne in 1987. On leave from her position as Head of the Community Dental Health Department at the United Dental Hospital in Sydney she completed a Master of Dental Science in Dental Public Health at the University of Iowa, College of Dentistry in 1995. After returning to Australia to work at the Dental Statistics and Research Unit she received her Doctorate from the University of Adelaide in 2001. Since 2004 she was teaching and researching as an Associate Professor in Preventive and Community Dentistry at the University of Iowa. Jane will be remembered by patients and colleagues alike for her dedication to special care dentistry. She was an editor and reviewer for numerous journals, and throughout her career her work and contributions were repeatedly acknowledged as outstanding. Jane was internationally recognized as an expert in the care of those with special needs providing continuing education and seminars to dentists in many countries.

She loved her family, patients and friends. She enjoyed being with people, making everyone around her feel they were part of her family circle. To hear Jane laugh was pure joy. Her greatest loves were her husband and two sons who will miss her greatly.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make contributions to her family; or to the “Maitri Yoga Education Fund”, c/o Friendship Yoga, 1231 Gilbert Court, Iowa City, Iowa 52240; or to the “Special Care Dentistry Association” and note The Jane Chalmers Memorial Award in the memo line.

In memory and in honor of a valued colleague, Special Care Dentistry announces The Jane Chalmers Memorial Award. The Jane Chalmers Memorial Award will be presented annually to a member of Special Care Dentistry Association who has demonstrated an outstanding achievement in the areas of Minimally Invasive Dentistry, Prevention and/or Restorative Oral Health Care.
