Services:Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City.
Visitation:Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4-7pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City where a vigil service will begin at 6:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or to the Visiting Nurses Association.
George J. Gassman, 91, died Friday, December 12, 2008 at home following a long illness.

George was born in Clinton, IA on February 22, 1917, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Klein Gassman. He graduated from Clinton High School and attended Iowa State University. George served in The United States Army in the Signal Corp during WWII. After returning from the service, George married Eileen Ernst who died a short time later. On October 13, 1951, George married Dolores Sperfslage in Castle Grove, IA. George spent his career as a Test Room Supervisor for AT&T. He had many hobbies and interests, some of which included being a licensed amateur radio operator, a telescope maker (including the 2nd largest reflecting telescope in Iowa), a photographer, and an inventor. He also loved astronomy, hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting and lapidary.

Survivors include his wife Dolores of Iowa City, a son George W. of Marshalltown, IA, two daughters; Janet (Robert) Otten of Silverdale, WA and Ruth (Joel Ybe) Gassman of Bloomington, IN, 4 grandchildren; Jessica and Vincent Gassman of Marshalltown, IA, Hans Otten of Seattle, WA and Benjamin Otten of Silverdale, WA, and George and Dolores’s very special friends James and Elizabeth Kerr and Henry and Nancy Peterson, all of Iowa City.
