Services:Funeral Mass celebrated at 10:00 am on Monday, January 12 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Iowa City, with Rev. Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial followed at St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Salvation Army.
Visitation:Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3-6 pm at Lensing Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue where a vigil service will begin at 5:30 pm.
Edward B. Buchanan Jr., 81, died Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center due to complications from a recent fall. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Monday, January 12 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Iowa City, with Rev. Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3-6 pm at Lensing Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue where a vigil service will begin at 5:30 pm. Edward was born on September 12, 1927, in Detroit, MI, the son of Edward Sr. and Mary (McCarthy) Buchanan. He graduated from The University of Detroit High School and Academy in 1945. At the age of 17, he enlisted in The United States Navy and was called to active duty in September and served as a Yeoman for one year. Ed also served two years in the Navy during the Korean War. Following the service, Ed returned to earn his B.S. and M.S. degrees from The University of Detroit and in 1959 he graduated from The Iowa State College with his Ph.D. Following graduation, Ed was an instructor for one year at The Iowa State College Department of Chemistry. In 1960, he became an Assistant Professor at The University of Iowa Chemistry Department and was promoted through the ranks to full professor. He retired as an emeritus professor in 1995.

On June 19, 1965, Ed married Mary Louise Strohmeyer in Iowa City. He was a 50 year member of The American Chemical Society and a longtime member of VFW Post#17. Ed also served on numerous committees including The Johnson County Computer Committee, The Land Use and Water Quality Committee and as a trustee for Penn Township.

Ed is survived by his wife, Mary Louise, of Iowa City, a sister, Mary Ann Carroll of Bloomfield Hills, MI, three nephews: James Carroll, William Carroll and Scott Buchanan, and three nieces: Judy Moore, Heather Smith and Joanne Hopkins.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Robert.
