Dr. Lara was born March 30, 1930 in Manila, Philippines where he was a graduate of Loyola University(formerly Ateneo University). He received his medical degree from the University of the Philippines. In 1965 he and his wife moved to Hawaii where he practiced medicine. They later moved to St. Louis where he
completed his residency in psychiatry. In 1968 they came to Iowa City where Dr. Lara was employed at UIHC. They have been residents of Iowa City for 40 years. He was a naturalized US citizen who faithfully served his adoptive country and state for 31 years as a staff psychiatrist for the Iowa Security Medical Facility in Oakdale, IA.

Dr. Lara’s interests included music, Japanese gardens, his collection of rare conifers, inspirational reading, touring America with his children, and the culinary arts. He was a dedicated professional and humble Renaissance man who treasured books by the pallet and enjoyed indulging his grandchildren. His gentle, erudite discourses on current events, theology, literature and Asian cooking, as well as his occasional bursts of gleeful giggles, will be sorely missed.

Dr. Lara is survived by his beloved wife, Teresa and their three children, all of whom were born in the United States; daughter, Rosemarie (Jim) Christensen of San Jose, CA and two sons, Michael of Iowa City, Iowa and Anthony of Washington, DC; grandchildren Emma and Daniel Christensen.

Dr. Lara was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings.
