Carroll Y. Matthews, 93 of 5087 American Legion Road, Iowa City died Tuesday, October 7, 2008, at Windmill Manor Care Center in Coralville.
Funeral services will be held at 3pm Saturday, October 11, 2008, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1pm Saturday until services. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Carroll's memory. Online condolences may be sent through the web @ www.gayandciha.com.
Carroll Y. Matthews was born February 8, 1915, in Toledo, OH, the son of Frank L. and Alice (Jarvis) Matthews. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth M. Romeo on October 5, 1940, in Toledo. The couple moved to Iowa City where he worked for Owens Brush for many years retiring in 1983 after 43 years of service.
Carroll was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Optimist Club, and lifelong diehard Republican. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and family, hiking in Colorado; hunting and fishing in Canada, and always found time for his golf game. Carroll was a man who lived his life, always intrigued by it, ready to solve whatever came his way, and generous to those around him.
His family includes his daughter, Joy Matthews Gadeken and her husband, Dr. Larry Gadeken of San Antonio, TX; son, John F. Matthews of Iowa City; grandchildren, Christian M. Gadeken of San Antonio, TX, Jessica Matthews Pollyea and her husband, Dr. Daniel Pollyea of San Francisco, CA, and Cassandra Matthews of New Castle, England; and his sister-in-law, Delores Matthews of Toledo, OH.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and five brothers, and 4 sisters.
