Cletus "Dave" Funk, 85 of 1621 Broadway, Iowa City died Thursday, August 21, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 25, 2008 at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Tiffin. Visitation will be from 2 to 4pm Sunday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Iowa City Animal Shelter or Iowa City Hospice. Online condolences may be sent for Dave's family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com.
Dave was born May 22, 1923, in Copi, Iowa the son of George and Ada (Newmire) Funk. During WWII he served in the 327th. AAA Searchlight Battalion at Ft. Bliss, TX, and the 759th. Field Artillery Batallion Camp Rucker, AL. From there he was deployed to the European front where he served until the end of the war. On March 11, 1944 he married Betty Potter in El Paso, TX. Dave worked for the Rock Island Railroad, the Russ Wicks Gas and Oil Company here in Iowa City, and owned and operated D & T CO2 Company retiring from that in the 1980's.
He was a member of the Eagles Lodge, Moose Lodge, and member of the Ocean Waves Square Dance Club. He and Betty so enjoyed all the dances they have attended over the years. He loved the outdoors, spending time with his family and dogs, and enjoying the simple things in life!
His family includes his wife, Betty; son, Rick Funk and his wife, Kathy of Riverside, grandchildren, Kari Schabilion and her husband, Abe and David Funk all of Riverside; and a sister, Lottie Marshall.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents, son, Terry Funk; brothers, Jim, Charlie, Donald, and John Funk; and sisters, Hazel White, Edith Shimon, and Marilyn Funk.
