James F. "Jim" Hoyt, 83 of rural Oxford, died Monday, August 11, 2008, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 14, 2008, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oxford, with Reverend Ed Dunn officiating. Burial with military honors will be at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Oxford. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Wednesday, at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in James' memory to the Iowa City Veterans Administration Hospital. James Francis Hoyt was born May 16, 1925, in Oxford. Iowa the son of Ambrose J. and Ellen R. (Barry) Hoyt. He was a 1943 graduate of Oxford High School and served in the 6th Armored Division of the Army during World War II, the Batle of the Bulge. Jim was one of the first four soldiers to discover the Buchenwald Concentration Camp that led to its liberation in April of 1945. He earned a Bronze Star while serving his country. On September 16, 1949, he married Doris Marie Hipp in Oxford. Returning from service he worked with his brothers in the construction trade until joining the United States Postal System in Oxford. He retired from here in 1992 after over thirty years of service. Jim was a member of the Oxford Legion Post No. 537 having served as Legion Commander. He was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oxford.

His family includes his wife, Doris; children, James Hoyt, Richard "John" Hoyt, Thomas (Susan) Hoyt all of Oxford, Michael (Nancy) Hoyt of Tiffin; daughters, Theresa (Eric) Stewart of Oxford, Patricia (John) Hatcher of Iowa City; eleven grandchildren, Heather Hoyt, Jeremy Hoyt, Ryan Hoyt, Jessica Hoyt, Amber Hoyt, Sara Stewart, Chad Stewart, Kate Stewart, Joshua (Debbie) Stewart, Jacob Stewart, Kaitlin Hatcher; siblings, Donald (Billie) Hoyt of Marion and Margaret (David) Hagan of Chandler, AZ.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William; a grandson and great-granddaughter.
