Jim was born November 4, 1936 in Iowa City the son of Lysle W. and Wilma (Hauth) Lenz. He graduated from the former University High School, and had attended the University of Iowa. On November 23, 1960, he married Helen M. Schlapkohl at the United Methodist Church in Lone Tree. The couple has been longtime residents of Iowa City where they are members of the First United Methodist Church. Jim was also a member of the Johnson County I Club, Iowa City Bowling Association, Ducks Unlimited, and the Roy L. Chopek Post No. 17 of the American Legion in Iowa City. Jim had been employed by Procter and Gamble for over thirty-three years retiring in 1991

He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, in fact he had been accused of preferring to fish over eating! Fishing at Lake Vermillion in Minnesota was an event that he treasured two or three times a year, with his friends, Max, Gary and Dick. There if the fish were not biting, or it was too cold, a rousing game of cribbage was in store with Max. Along with cribbage, many of his friends have played many hands of euchre with Jim. Jim enjoyed traveling with Helen, having been to Alaska, Hawaii, Nova Scotia, and on a cruise through the Panama Canal.

Jim’s family includes his wife, Helen; two sons, Bill of Iowa City, and Tim and his wife, Leah of Iowa City; two granddaughters, Emma and Caitlin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, Robert.

Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Jim’s family and his services.
