Adelaide L. Sedlacek Jiras, age 92 of Oxford, died Wednesday, January 8, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 11, 2002, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford with the Reverend Edmond Dunn officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Oxford. Visitation will be from 3 to 8pm Friday at the Church where at parish vigil service will be held at 7pm followed by a parish rosary. Memorial donations can be made in her memory to the St. Mary’s Catholic Church Building Fund or to the Oxford Lions Club Park. Adelaide was born September 11, 1910, in rural Johnson County, Iowa the daughter of Wesley and Clara (Tomash) Sedlacek. She married Wesley Clarence Jiras September 30, 1931, in Johnson County. They farmed and raised their family on a farm northeast of Oxford. Wesley died in 1953; Adelaide continued to live on the farm for a while, later moving into Oxford. Here she was involved with working at the Oxford Sale Barn, Oxford Schools, and the George L. Gay Funeral Home Oxford’s Chapel.

She was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford, and the Altar and Rosary Society of the Church. Adelaide loved her family, cooking and baking for family and friends, and dancing until she dropped in many of the dance ballrooms of this area.

Her family includes three sons and their wives, Larry and Eileen Jiras, Jim and Mary Sue Jiras, and Raymond and Bonnie Jiras all of Oxford; son-in-law, Raphael “Joe” Kahle of Watkins; Grandchildren, Terry Kahle, Jan Camp, Connie Benyshek, Nancy Netolicky, Dan Kahle, Jeff Jiras, Tammy Smith, Paulette Hobbs, Jason Jiras, Jennifer Wood, Steve Jiras, Cherri Block, Marty Jiras, Clint Jiras, and Jeret Jiras; and eighteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wesley; daughter, Carleen Kahle; grandson, Tom Kahle; great-grandson, Tyler Kahle; and a brother, Edward Sedlacek.
