Thomas S. Smith 79, of 917 S. Gilbert Ct., Iowa City, died Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City due to a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, March 3, 2008, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Gail Mitchell officiating. Burial with military honors will be at the Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty. Visitation will be from 2 to 4pm Sunday at the funeral home. Thomas Samuel Smith was born June 10, 1928 in Formosa, AR, the son of James Williams and Lucy Ann (Netherton) Smith. He graduated from high school in Arkansas, following graduation he joined the National Guard in which he served for 19 years. During this time he acquired the name of "Weenie Burner" for his cooking skills. He liked to cook, but you couldn't eat it! For more than fifty years he worked for the University of Iowa. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, watching sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeye's, and the Arkansas Razorbacks. Tom also like a good game of horseshoes, golf, but most of all spending as much time as possible with his grandchildren.
His family includes three sons Michael (Edna) Smith of Des Moines, James Smith of Iowa City, Tony (Dee) Smith of Whitehall IL; three daughters Kathi (Dale) Harris of Des Moines, Sandy Malone of Florence, AL, and Barb (Dennis) Slater of Louisville, KY.; his best friend and companion, Myrna Bixby of Iowa City; 12 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and others who all loved this good man!
He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 sisters, and 1 brother.
