Justice Louis W. Schultz, 80 formerly of Coralville, died Tuesday, February 19, 2008, peacefully in his sleep from heart disease in his home in Williamsburg.
Memorial services will be held at 12:30 p.m., Monday, February 25, 2008, at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Kyle Otterbein officiating. Following the services everyone is invited for a time of fellowship and refreshments at the church. Memorial donations can be made in Louis's memory to U of I Foundation in support of Iowa Women's Basketball Program or Football Program, Drake University Law School, or St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in support of Missions. Louis William Schultz was born March 24, 1927, in Deep River, Iowa the son of Martin Louis and Esther (Behrens) Schultz. Following graduation from Deep River High School in 1944, he attended Central College, and received his L.L.B Degree from Drake University in 1949. During World War II he served his country as a Pharmacist's Mate Third Class in the United States Navy. He served as a Navy Corpsman on the USS Benevolence and the USS President Adams in the America Area and the Asia Pacific. He married Delores Jean Stephen on November 6, 1949. After law school, Louis worked for Farm Bureau Insurance in Decorah and later in Des Moines as managing the claims department. Louis practiced Law in Marengo starting in 1956. He also served as Iowa County Attorney from 1960 through 1968. In 1971 he became a District Judge for the Sixth Judicial District of Iowa. On August 19, 1980, Louis was appointed to the Iowa Supreme Court, a position he held until his retirement from the bench in 1993. He then served as a Senior Judge for the Iowa Supreme Court until he turned 77. Also after 1993 he performed mediation work part-time for about 10 years.
He was a member of the Iowa State Bar Association, and Past President of the Iowa Judges Association. Louis was a member of Rotary for over 40 years and most recently a member of Kiwanis while living in Williamsburg. He was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Iowa City.
Louis and his wife of 55 years cherished their grandchildren. They traveled extensively taking one or two of the grandchildren on each trip to places the children would enjoy. Louis's interest during retirement turned toward genealogy, taking him and his wife to several places in the United States and Germany in search of their family's history. Louis and Jean were also long-time avid Hawkeye fans taking them to all of the Big Ten schools for various sporting events. Louis also had a lifelong passion for hunting and fishing that he shared with his two sons and close friends.
His family includes daughter, Marcia K. Schultz, esq. and her husband, Randy Schmidt esq. of Saipan, N. Mariana Islands; two sons and their wives, Dr. Mark Schultz and Shari of Storm Lake, and Paul Schultz and Julie of Iowa City; seven grandchildren, Stephen and Eric Schultz of Iowa City, Ryan, Ross, Collin, Casey, and Shannon Schultz all of Storm Lake; brother, Arnold Schultz and his wife, Imogene of Grundy Center, IA; and sister, Rosemary Behrens and her husband, Gary of Redwood City, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Jean (September 28, 2005).
