Robert Leo "Bob" Sterba, 63, of 663 Linder Road NE, Iowa City passed away at home on Saturday, January 19, 2008, of cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 22, 2008, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Gail Mitchell officiating. Burial will be at the Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty. Visitation will be from 3 to 7pm Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Iowa City Hospice. Robert Leo Sterba was born September 29, 1944, in Iowa City the son of Anton "Tony" Sterba and Helen Meka Sterba. He was a 1962 graduate of University High School in Iowa City. On August 7, 1965, he married Mary Lou Dalton in Iowa City. They divorced in 1992 and Bob later married Phyllis Owen December 7, 2007, in Iowa City. For 33 years Bob worked for Magellan Pipeline, formerly Williams Pipeline retiring this past year. For over twenty years he served with the 109th Medical Division of the Iowa National Guard, based in Iowa City. He was a member of the North Liberty American Legion Post #1976; he enjoyed the outdoors, hunting mushrooms, watching the wildlife (especially deer and hummingbirds) and doing yardwork around his home. Bob loved to cook and play cards with family and friends.
His survivors include his wife, Phyllis; his children, Annette Barta and her husband Bob of North Liberty; Jeffrey Sterba of North Liberty; and Daniel Sterba of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Tony, Jessica, and Samantha; former wife, Mary Lou Sterba of West Branch; two brothers, James Sterba and his partner Jim Grim of West Des Moines, and Donald Sterba and his wife, Marcia of North Liberty; and Bob's faithful companion, Shania!
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Bob's family would like to thank the following for such loving and wonderful care given to Bob during his illness. They are the staff and doctors at the Pinedale Medical Clinic in Pinedale, WY; Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Drs. Ferial Tewfik and James Feeley; and Iowa City Hospice.
