Mary T. “Hopie” Rhodes, age 75, of 2836 Friendship Street, Iowa City died Saturday, November 16, 2002 at her home surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 8pm Monday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, where a parish vigil service will be held at 6:30 p.m., by Sister Agnes Giblin. Memorial donations can be made to Iowa City Hospice in appreciation of their love and support to Mary and her family during her illness and death. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Mary’s services and her family.

“Hopie” was born December 17, 1926 in Iowa City the daughter of Richard and Agnes (Neuzil) Kaspar. She graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in 1945. On October 19, 1949, she married Robert E. Rhodes at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City. For a number of years she worked as a bookkeeper for Motts Drug Store, Stewarts Shoe Store and for Hamburg Inn all in Iowa City before accepting a position at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as a telecommunications officer. After working for over twenty-three years, she retired in 1988.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, National Catholic Order of Foresters, Altar and Rosary Society in the Church. If you knew “Hopie”, you knew a woman that loved her husband, lived for her children and grandchildren, and was a true and avid Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan.

Her family includes her husband, Robert; daughters, Linda and her husband Jerry Brumley of Iowa City, Diane and her husband, Bruce Meyer of Lincoln, NE, Cindy and her husband, Mike Neuzil of Iowa City, Bev and her husband, Ron Wenman of Coralville, and Susan and her husband, Steve Elder of Sullivan, IL; sons, Bob Rhodes and his fiancé, Teri Nevells of Bangor, ME, and Randy and his wife, Karen Rhodes of Batavia, Il; thirteen grandchildren, Aron Meyer, Tiffany, Courtney and Shannon Neuzil, Danielle and Corey Rhodes, Kim and Kelly Wenman, Ryan, Kristin and Rachel Rhodes, and Jessica and Justin Elder.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Dorothy Mascher Faulkes, and an infant granddaughter.
